在鄂尔多斯盆地东缘2000米地层发现了我国首个千亿方深煤层气田——神府深煤层大气田，探明地质储量超1100亿立方米。

按自然资源部相关划分标准，煤层气资源储量规模按照地质储量划分。其中，地质储量在300亿立方米及以上为大型煤层气田，地质储量在30亿—300亿立方米为中型，地质储量小于30亿立方米为小型。
神府深煤层大气田位于陕西榆林，地处鄂尔多斯盆地东缘，煤层主要埋深2000米左右，单层厚度在6.2米—23.3米之间，吨煤平均含气量达15立方米。目前，该区域共部署了100多口探井，单井最高日产量达2.6万立方米。
煤层气俗称“瓦斯”，是指储存在煤层中的天然气，属于非常规天然气。中国煤层气资源丰富，据了解，陆地埋深2000米以内的煤层气资源量为30万亿立方米，其中，深部煤层气资源量约占1/3。
神府深煤层大气田的发现展示了鄂尔多斯盆地东缘深部煤层气藏勘探开发的广阔前景，对我国类似盆地资源勘探和非常规油气增储上产具有重要指导意义，同时也对保障国家能源安全、助力新时代西部大开发具有重要意义。
